Door Mat Buying Guide
Your entryway is not only important for curb appeal but also a first impression that visitors have of your home. An entry mat that traps dirt, grime, and moisture can make your home feel welcoming. To help you select the right door mat for you, we’ll show you a variety of them.
Door Mat Considerations
There are some things you need to consider before buying a doormat. There are many types of mats available. They come in different sizes, shapes, and styles. Some mats can be:
- Textured
- Mold-resistant
- Waterproof
- Flame retardant
- Fire-resistant
- Antimicrobial
Consider where you would like to place your doormat. Is it an indoor or outdoor mat? An outdoor mat acts as a dirt- and mud barrier, while an indoor mat absorbs moisture to keep it from getting wet. How much foot traffic will there be? Your doormat should be durable if there is a lot of foot traffic. What material should you choose?
Door Mat Materials
Doormats can be made from many materials including polyester, recycled rubber, and coir.
Polyester Mats come in many textures and colors that will not fade. They are easy to clean and slip-resistant.
Coir Mats are ideal for outdoor use. Coir gives an entryway a natural appearance. Coir’s coarse, strong fibers are ideal for scraping dirt from boots and shoes.
Waterhog mats are long-lasting and nonporous. You can make them in many different patterns. They are water-repellent and easy to clean.
Vinyl or rubber can be used as the backing material for doormats. Open-back mats have open spaces or holes that allow water and snow to drain easily. This mat can collect more debris and will need to be cleaned more frequently. It is more suitable for outdoor use. Solid-backed door mats protect wooden floors from debris and shoes.
Door Mat Sizes And Shapes
There are many options for doormats, such as round, semicircle, square, or rectangular. Consider the size and thickness when purchasing a doormat. A thicker mat is not always better. A mat with a smaller pile is sometimes more effective than one with a thicker pile. It also removes dirt and debris better. If the mat is too thick it will not clear the swing of your door and it won’t allow you to open it.
A standard size door is usually 18 inches by 30 inches (1-1/2 ft by 2-1/2 ft). This size is suitable for both standard front and rear doors.
Nonslip Door Mats
The rubber backing prevents the mat from sliding. Nonslip surfaces help prevent accidents like falls and trips. A rug padding holds the mat in place and prevents slippage, especially for indoor mats.
Boot Scraper Mats
Boot scraper mats can be used to keep dirt and mud out of the environment or to protect floors and carpeting. Boot scraper mats are made with coarse, bristly fibers which do a great job cleaning shoes and boots’ bottoms. Coir boot-scraper mats are made from natural, dense fiber from the coconut shell.
Cleaning A Mat For Doors
Doormats trap dirt, mud, and other contaminants. They can also be full of insects, germs, or leaves. Different mats can be made from different materials so cleaning methods may vary depending on which one you choose. To find out if your mat can be machine washed, please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions. Many indoor mats can be machine washed.
