The instrument rating will help you become a safer and more confident pilot. If you fly for any airline, you have to get your instrument rating. It is a vital step in getting your private pilot license. Getting rated for your instrument will make you a better pilot. For example, getting an a320 type rating allows you to fly in different weather conditions, unlike pilots without an instrument rating. Getting your instrument rating can be very challenging. It requires about 40 instrument flight hours most of the time, and it is a huge commitment. However, while you’re preparing mentally and physically, you also need to prepare financially. If you’re wondering how much an instrument rating costs, keep reading as we break it down.

Cost of an Instrument Rating

An instrument rating usually costs around $8000 overall. This figure factors in the examination fee, the airplane, ground school, instructor, and the study material. Keep reading for how much they cost.

Airplane Cost

Your instrument rating requires that you get about 40 hours of flight training. If you’re trying to get an a320 type rating, then you will need actual or simulated flight hours in the instrument. The chances are that you possess some hours in from your private pilot training days. But if you do not, then you would have to start from scratch. Renting an airplane differs according to the aircraft and your geography. For example, when getting an a320 type rating, an average for rental would be $125, which rounds up to $5000 for 40 hours.

Instructor Costs

Whether you want to attend a flight school or get a personal instructor, you will have to pay the instructor. There are times when the instructor fees are included in the airplane cost. However, you should never assume they are. Instead, you should prepare separately for it. If you’re booking your flight attendant for 40 flight hours at $50 per hour, it adds up to $2000 at the end.

Ground School and Examination Fees

The ground school is an integral part of the instrument rating. It covers materials like approach plates, new maps, and also necessary procedures. You will also learn about weather in detail as you will be flying in the weather Examination fees are usually set at $150, and you need your instructor endorsement. Ground school cost usually differs according to the school, but the average for a couple of days is usually $300.

Practical Text Examiner

When your training is complete, there’s the oral and practical flight check ride like getting the private pilot license. Although it differs by city, it usually falls with $600, and you have to pay during the exam. All the costs add up to $8000 as an estimate. Although it might be lower or higher according to your region, this is a good starting point.
